Description
We at the Bala Lake Railway have teamed up with our good friends at Bachmann Europe and are proud to offer this scale 009 model of Quarry Hunslet George B No.680 using a unique combination of tooling. Barely larger than a 9V battery, this diminutive model still packs a punch with its diecast boiler and running plate, accompanied by a wealth of separately fitted details including handrails, valves, springs, brake shoes and cab controls. The 0-4-0ST wheel formation is faithfully modelled, with authentically-profiled wheels running in metal bearings ensuring smooth running, powered by a coreless motor with flywheel, and with a 6 Pin DCC decoder socket for those wishing to use the models with a DCC system. NEM coupling pockets feature at both ends, into which standard OO9 scale couplings are fitted.

George B, Hunslet works no. 680 History
Built in 1898 and originally named Wellington, she worked at Port Dinorwic from new, moving up to Dyffryn Level in the quarry in 1929 and then to the lower level of Dinorwic Slate Quarry hauling wagons of finished slate from the inclines to the 4 foot gauge rail head at Gilfach Ddu from 1935. She was later named George B after a family member of the quarry owner, the engine was purchased directly from Dinorwic in 1965 by the late Alan White who moved the loco to Ashchurch, Gloucestershire home of the Dowty Railway Preservation Society. The engine ran for a couple of years on the Dowty line but was withdrawn from service in 1969 and stripped down to enable a total overhaul to be carried out. Due to changing circumstances, while much work had been done on components, the loco was not reconstructed.
Following an agreement between Alan White and Bala Lake Railway, all the parts were moved to Llanuwchllyn to enable a full rebuild to take place which was carried out in the railways own works aided by Chief Engineer Robert Houghton to an exceptionally high standard.
Restoration to full working order was completed in the Spring of 2017 and George B joined the railways operational fleet. She proved a very reliable and popular locomotive being in as close to original appearance as possible. George B’s boiler ticket expired in 2025 and its 10 year overhaul will begin shortly. She is expected to return to traffic in 2027. Proceeds from sales of this model will go towards bringing George B back into service.
