Description
This 106-paged softback book traces the development of the Bala Lake Railway from its earliest beginnings through expansion, consolidation, to the present day it draws on the railway’s extensive photographic archive, with almost 200 carefully selected images, mostly colour and many previously unpublished.
After a short introduction, and a foreword by the railway’s Chairman Dr David Gwyn, there are contributions from Bala Lake Railway Trust Chairman Julian Birley BEM and Anthony Coulls, Senior Curator of Rail Transport & Technology at the National Railway Museum.
The historical review begins by taking a brief look at the Bala Lake Railway’s roots in the former Great Western Ruabon – Barmouth line and its links to the North Wales slate industry. Sections then focus on phases in the railway’s evolution from founder George Barnes’ earliest vision to the line we see today; each has a short historical introduction followed by an extensive selection of photographs.
